Competitors from 43 countries will take part in the 15th Annual Abu
Dhabi International Chess Festival which will begin on Sunday at the
Khalidiya Palace Hotel.
The event, to be held under the patronage of Lt Gen Shaikh Saif Bin
Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Interior, will feature 34 Grandmasters,
including 3 ladies, 18 International Masters, including four ladies, 8
FIDE Masters and 11 players with elo ratings more than 2,200. All these
highly qualified and experienced players will compete in the Masters
Championship.
GM Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, from Azerbaijan, heads the ranking of the
Masters Championship with 2,646 elo rating followed by GM Aleksandrov
Aleksej from Belarus with 2,630, GM Volkov Sergey from Russia with
2,622, GM Vladimirov Evgeny from Kazakhstan at 2,616 and GM Kobalia
Mikhail from Russia with 2,614.
The players will represent Qatar, Sudan, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon,
Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Russia,
England, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Iran, India,
Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Turkmenistan, Germany,
Philippines, Croatia, Bosnia, Tajikstan, Hungary, Pakistan, Holland,
Romania, Serbia and UAE.
UAE's FM Jasim Abdul Rahman Salih leads the local players who will take
part in the Masters Championship to gain experience. The list of local
players features Faisal Abdulla, Ebrahim Esmail, FM Ahmad Ishag, FM
Ebrahim Mohammad Khory, FM Salim Abdul Rahman Salih, Mansour Abbass and
Marwan Abdul Wahab.
The festival also includes an Open Tournament with more than 150
competitors, including one lady GM from Iran, four FMs and 11 rated
players. There are also championships for the under-16, under-12 and
Blitz categories.
Cash prizes for the Masters Championship are worth $16,400 (Dh60,319).
The top-15 competitors will get cash prizes.
